Capturing the Great Depression

Last semester I took an amazing class where at the closing dinner I had the privilege of hearing Linda Gordon speak about her latest book called Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits.  While many people may not be familiar with the name Dorothea Lange, they will surely recognize the iconic photographs that she took during the Great Depression.  For anyone interested in labor or feminism, or merely an engaging story about an amazing woman, this book is an incredible read.
In homage to amazing artists who captured the Great Depression, I will also mention a few John Steinbeck works that are must-reads for those who may have missed them in 11th grade English class. Like Dorothea Lange's photographs, Steinbeck had a beautiful way of capturing an era in which both the humanity and the issues plaguing humanity are reflected as enduring and universal.  My personal favorite Steinbeck read would have to be The Grapes of Wrath; however, In Dubious Battle takes a close second.
Almost makes me want to take a photography course like this one in France...oui oui...
